Wedding cupcakes!

Things that are less intimidating than a three tier, gorgeous wedding cake: cupcakes.

A friend of a friend of mine (Thanks, Melissa, for the recommendation :)) is coming over to taste these little confections for her wedding in November. The theme is black and ivory. I made carrot, red velvet, and chocolate cupcakes with three different types of icing for her to try. I scoured the cake shop near my house and found black cupcake liners and various black decorations. They have so many fun different things that it was hard not to walk away with more. And I definitely want more people to ask me to make them fanciful cupcakes.

Another wedding cake, done

I can't take much credit for the cake's appearance; the fresh flowers were applied by Juliet's florist, but I did get the icing smooth and make a cake well structured enough that it didn't topple. Thankfully I had plenty of patient, helpful friends around to encourage me along. And unless everyone at the ceremony was lying to my face, it tasted pretty darn good, too.

I used plastic straws for the dowel structure this time which I liked a lot more than the wooden dowel rods. The only real problem was when the layers were separated, my coating of powdered sugar wasn't quite enough to leave a clean surface where the cake board had been resting on the layer beneath it, and lots of cake was left frosting-less. I 'spose there's a reason people suggested coconut rather than sugar, but it turned out just fine, with plenty of cake to go around.

Most importantly, the bride and groom were thrilled, which is really all I wanted. Congratulations Juliet and Ryan!!
